During the 16th and the 17th century, some parts of the structure were used as dwelling place of prisoners that are of the noble rank. In the year 1694, the castle was rebuilt on a Baroque style and is said to have housed at least three types of ghosts. First is the grey lady, another is the white lady and a ghost of one of the prisoners which was James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell.
